January 5 Bible reading

4 01 2019

Each day of the year I’ll post verses to read, with the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us, expressed through Jesus.

Please read the verses below, prayerfully consider them, and then my comments may be helpful after those moments.

January 5  Psalm 4  Matthew 4:23-25; 5:1-20  Genesis 9:18-29; 10; 11:1-9

What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?

Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?

What should you do about that truth?

Psalm 4 – Multiple times over his life, David faced opposition from people who preferred him dead. David learned to look to God as the source for help. David learned the value of complete honesty with God and not being controlled by what he was feeling. David found peace in God’s presence. David found more joy in God than he did in the best that this life has to offer.

Matthew 4:23-25; 5:1-20 – Jesus Christ taught about the Kingdom of God publicly. Jesus healed all kinds of illness. Crowds gathered and Jesus taught them. Jesus revealed the heart of God as very different from carnal human nature. Father God blesses people out of His loving generosity and not for His own advantage. Jesus calls His followers to live in a way that would bring glory to God. Jesus brought fulfillment to the Old Testament law and prophecies. Jesus called His followers to obey the Scriptures and to teach them.

Genesis 9:18-29; 10; 11:1-9 – After the great flood the sons of Noah and their descendants multiplied. Their genealogies were tracked because every day and every human life has value with God. Ancient people all spoke the same language at one point in time. People gathered in the area of Babylon in hopes of security and family. Instead of serving God, they pursued their own purpose. God confused their efforts by giving them different languages.

What a contrast! The difference between how God responds to those who live for their own fame and those who worship Him, follow Him, honor His word!
