February 5  Proverbs 4:1-9  Matthew 24:1-31  Job 35; 36; 37

Please read the suggested passages, prayerfully consider them, and the questions below. My comments here may be helpful after those moments. The suggested daily reading is for the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us has been expressed through Jesus.

  • What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?
  • Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?
  • What should you do about that truth?

February 5  Proverbs 4:1-9  Matthew 24:1-31  Job 35; 36; 37

Proverbs 4:1-9  God has given us creativity and curiosity. We are designed to enjoy learning. Growing in knowledge, understanding, and wisdom will help us develop discernment and good decision making. This will bring benefits and protection. Will we choose to be receptive to truth and wisdom? 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 gives us a warning in this. In Proverbs, we are directed to follow instructions and seek wisdom.

Matthew 24:1-31  Jesus lamented the destruction coming to Jerusalem. He gave the disciples an idea of what would happen before His return to earth. Jesus predicted war, famine, earthquakes, and rampant sin. Jesus prepared His followers for persecution. On account of the name of Jesus, people would be hated around the world. There will be imposters and deceivers. A patient endurance comes from understanding Jesus. When He returns it will be unmistakable and unavoidable. The glory of God will the heavens and the earth. Jesus prepares for His return by instructing us to live expectantly and yet not follow rumors of it.

Job 35; 36; 37  Elihu insists that Job must have brought the suffering upon himself by unconfessed sin. He believes that Job is ignoring the wisdom of God. Elihu brings perspective mixing truth and wrong thinking. He lacked understanding. As a result, he thinks that he is bringing Job wisdom that he is not. A cautionary tale.
