March 4 Bible reading

March 4  Psalm 30:1-7  Mark 12:13-27  Leviticus 11; 12

Please read the suggested passages, prayerfully consider them, and the questions below. My comments here may be helpful after those moments. The suggested daily reading is for the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us has been expressed through Jesus.

  • What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?
  • Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?
  • What should you do about that truth?

March 4  Psalm 30:1-7  Mark 12:13-27  Leviticus 11; 12

Psalm 30:1-7  I will describe God as better than anyone/anything else because He has rescued me. King David sings in this way, publicly, at the dedication of the Temple. He has remembered the ways that God has answered his prayer. God is the One who rescues us and restores us to health.

Mark 12:13-27  Jesus would not be trapped into taking a position in an argument between polarizing thoughts about Roman political authority. Jesus talks about living for God completely and living responsibly in this natural world. Jesus speaks of resurrection from the dead and that God is Lord over both the living and the dead, pointing out what is important and advising us to not get distracted by side issues. They were living by priorities focused on what they possessed in this natural world. We will experience more peace if we prioritize that which lasts forever: God our Creator and people. What do I value most?

Leviticus 11; 12  In Leviticus God is giving instructions for healthy clean living, and also bringing the concept of cleanliness over living an unexamined carnal life. God is telling His people, “You are special. Don’t live in a careless way.” In the redemption narrative, God’s story through human history, this understanding of healthy life and cleanliness is crucial. Through a sin offering (and our ultimate sacrifice Jesus) they would come to understand and experience a life-changing benefit of being spiritually cleansed. Peace and joy are found in this way.
