September 1 Bible reading

1 09 2019

September 1  Proverbs 21:17-26  2 Corinthians 5:1-10  Micah 5; 6; 7

Please read the suggested passages, prayerfully consider them, and the questions below. My comments here may be helpful after those moments. The suggested daily reading is for the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us has been expressed through Jesus.

  • What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?
  • Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?
  • What should you do about that truth?

September 1  Proverbs 21:17-26  2 Corinthians 5:1-10  Micah 5; 6; 7

Proverbs 21:17-26

Here we have a few proverbs about how we use money. An unhealthy use of money is seen in prioritizing pleasure now over being able to pay for food and lodging tomorrow (among other ways). It is seen when one has money today and becomes unable to support one’s self by foolish spending. Generosity is a characteristic of someone who loves God.

2 Corinthians 5:1-10

When Christ returns to earth, His followers will receive glorified bodies, not born of broken human DNA (affected by sin) but created by God. No more pain, disease, or suffering. Leaving our current bodies, we will be living with God. We should live in light of this truth. Spend time thinking about it today. How does that impact the way you feel, what you think, the decisions you make?

Micah 5; 6; 7

God shows Micah that he has seen both the people choosing to reject Him and the people choosing to remain faithful to Him. Seeking restoration, God recounts the history of relationship with them. God is asking that they love mercy, walk humbly, and do what is right. Hope for restoration, for miracles, and the faithful love of God is what is being spoken for their future. Our God wants us to choose the love found in healthy relationship with Him.
