October 2 Bible reading

1 10 2019

October 2  Psalm 116:1-11  Philippians 3; 4:1  Jeremiah 4:10-31; 5

Please read the suggested passages, prayerfully consider them, and the questions below. My comments here may be helpful after those moments. The suggested daily reading is for the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us has been expressed through Jesus.

  • What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?
  • Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?
  • What should you do about that truth?

October 2  Psalm 116:1-11  Philippians 3; 4:1  Jeremiah 4:10-31; 5

Psalm 116:1-11

Fearing for his life, the songwriter called on God for rescue. Through real-life experience, he learned that God listened to his cries. In Psalm 116 the songwriter calms himself with the memory of God’s rescue of him in the past.

Philippians 3; 4:1

Passionately Paul writes of the essential nature of relying on faith in Jesus as our means of salvation and not our own righteous deeds. He refutes false teachers and their manipulation of God’s Word. They were trying to gain influence by teaching that circumcision and obedience to Jewish customs were essential to salvation. Having obeyed each of these laws, Paul writes that faith in Christ has brought salvation. His obedience to these laws did not bring about his salvation. Paul writes that he will daily pursue personal spiritual growth and obedience to God, as long as he lives.

Jeremiah 4:10-31; 5

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God calls His people to a change of heart so that they may be saved. Jeremiah mourns the unrepentant state of his people. God sends Jeremiah looking for even just one honest person. Jeremiah sees God searching for people with an honest heart toward God. Yet Jeremiah sees the people refusing to repent of their sin and rejecting the God who created it all.
