January Bible reading

31 12 2019

Each day of the year I’ll post verses to read, with the purpose of reading through the whole Bible within a year.

Reading the Bible is helpful in taking next steps to follow Jesus. It may not be easy and yet it can be rewarding. Digging into Scripture alongside people you know is a life-giving way to pursue answers together. We discover the love that God has for us, expressed through Jesus.

Please read the verses below, prayerfully consider the Scripture, ask yourself these questions, and then my comments may be helpful after those moments.

  • What’s the plain simple truth of the verses you read?
  • Based on today’s reading, what is one thing God is saying to you?
  • What should you do about that truth?

Here’s a sample of my daily posts, which can be found each day at BenMalmin.com

January 1 – Psalm 1,  Matthew 1,  Genesis 1; 2:1-17

Psalm 1 – The Psalms are a collection of songs exalting God. It serves as a book of prayer and praise. They are grouped into five “books” within the book. Psalm 1 starts us with an understanding that we can be healthy and fruitful in any season of life as we choose to be God-focused taking joy in God’s word. Today we can apply Psalm 1 by saying, “As we follow Jesus God will watch over us.”

Matthew 1 – In Matthew 1 the genealogy of Jesus shows us that God redeems our mistakes and injustices. The miracle birth of Jesus was precisely predicted and witnessed by people who recorded the details. Jesus Christ was born with the purpose to “save his people from their sins” and to be “God with us”. The purpose of Jesus includes our freedom from disorder and self-destruction.

Genesis 1; 2:1-17  In Genesis we read the jaw-dropping account of the creation of all that we see in our natural world. God, our Creator, is the giver of life. God created people by design with purpose. God shaped our personal identity so that we can be like Him. God has given all of us purpose. God has given us many functions including the stewardship of natural resources. We are allowed the opportunity to take care of our natural world and live out our God-given purpose from our identity as God’s children. God has shown love for us in who he is, in his work, and in his rest. In the rhythm of life, the timing of work and rest, the balance of being and doing, God has designed life for our benefit. We find personal identity in the fact that we are created in his image, and purpose in loving others in the same way God loved us.
